Anthony Crolla |
Former British champion Anthony ‘Million Dollar’ Crolla will get a swift an unlikely opportunity to get his career back on track after agreeing to take the final place in the latest installment of Prizefighter The Lightweights II, which takes place at Liverpool’s Olympia on October 6.
These Prizefighters constantly entertain and are always welcomed on the fight calender when they come along. In this one, Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn may just have put enough ingredients in the pot this time to produce one of the best helpings to date.
1) Derry Mathews (Liverpool) Won 30 (KO 16) – Lost 7 Drawn 1
2) Stephen Jennings (Liverpool) Won 5 (KO 2) – Lost 1 Drawn 1
3) Terry Needham (Liverpool) Won 6 (KO 2) – Lost 1 Drawn 0
4) Nathan Brough (Liverpool) Won 8 (KO 2) – Lost 0 Drawn 0
5) Gary Sykes (Dewsbury) Won 20 (KO 5) – Lost 2 Drawn 0
6) Kieran Farrell (Heywood) Won 13 (KO 3) – Lost 0 Drawn 0
7) Liam Patrick Walsh (Halifax) Won 10 (KO 3) – Lost 1 Drawn 0
8) Anthony Crolla (Manchester) Won 23 (KO 9) – Lost 3 Drawn 0
Crolla’s inclusion may see him go up against past opponents Derry Mathews and Gary Sykes in a battle of former Lonsdale belt holders, three fighters who find themselves re-building their careers after defeats. Crolla lost his last fight and his belt to Mathews in April via a 6th round stoppage.
Mathews has since lost the title to European champion Gavin Rees but with Rees set to vacate the British belt to fight for a world title, the winner of this Prizefighter will be in contention for a title shot.
For Gary Sykes this will be his second tilt at a Prizefighter tournament. The last time he entered the super-featherweight line-up in November 2010, he did so as British champion and was stopped by Gary Buckland in the semi-final. Sykes’ previous with Crolla dates back to May 2009, when the Dewsbury man outpointed Mancunian Crolla over 10 rounds in a British Super Featherweight Title Eliminator. These three are the favorites in the draw and will be the ones to beat.
Joining Mathews, Sykes and Crolla, are Stephen Jennings, Liam Patrick Walsh, Terry Needham plus promising unbeaten youngsters Nathan Brough and Kieran Farrell all hoping to take the throphy and £32,000 winner’s cheque, in the 26th edition of the eight man, one night tournament.
“Prizefighter is back with a bang with our strongest line-up ever,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “I never expected a dream line-up like this and Anthony’s inclusion is the icing on the cake.
“Ideally we would’ve loved to have this in a 5,000-seater arena but the fans will experience an atmosphere like never before in the Liverpool Olympia and this is a must see night of boxing on Sky Sports on October 6.”
On a big night for Merseyside boxing, on the same bill, Rocky Fielding will challenge Wayne Reed for the Central Area super middleweight title.
A former Prizefighter winner himself, Fielding fights for his first title at the venue of his Prizefighter triumph in March 2011 when he became the Super Middleweight II champion and the first man to win competition with three KO wins.
We Cant wait!!
