Former champion on aftercare for retired fighters.
Manchester boxing legend John Murray had a distinguished career and goes down as one of Manchester’s best ever lightweights. A former English, British and European Champion, Murray also commanded a big following in part down to his warrior spirit and no nonsense style of fighting.
Although he reached dizzy heights as a fighter, in retirement he has been vocal about the way he was dispensed with after he hung up his gloves. Arguing that fighters need proper guidance and mentoring throughout and after their careers, Murray is a passionate advocate of boxers pocketing more of the financial pie.
Murray, now a trainer, sits down with Aky to discuss the mental and physical aspects of a boxers life after retirement and talk about how he views the role of promoters and managers in relation to their charges.
