British lightweight Maxi Hughes is set to face former world champion George Kambosos Jr in June, according to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger.

Contracts have been signed between the pair for a bout in Australia, says Coppinger.

Hughes parted ways with Matchroom Boxing following his victory over Kid Galahad in September.

A mooted bout with Ryan Garcia failed to develop but the 33 year old will now earn a shot at one of the division’s top names.

Kambosos Jr meanwhile suffered back-to-back defeats to Devin Haney in 2022 with both fights also taking place in Australia.

The 29 year old shocked the boxing world when he outpointed then lightweight ruler Teofimo Lopez Jr in November 2021.

The Australian floored Lopez Jr in the opening round before going on to emerge victorious by way of split-decision in New York.

His return saw an immediate face-off with Haney in Melbourne in consecutive bouts, though the American won both fights handily to become the undisputed champion at 135lbs.
