Junior Witter trailing on points against unbeaten American Devon Alexander in a fight for the WBC light welterweight title. Witter inexplicably quit on his stool.
Alexander was dominant from start to finish and two judges had him in front 79-73 while the third had it 80-72.
Alexander hurt Witter several times throughout the fight, including with a big left in the fifth round. which had him realing, Somehow, Witter avoided going down from that big blow.
The referee, had just warned the British fighter not to keep holding or he would have points taken away. Junior was cut, but the sudden end came as a big surprise. he was well behind, on points but stil looked to be in the fight and shown no signs of giving up.
After the fight Witter explained he had suffered an elbow injury.
“My elbow went in, probably, round 4, and I couldn’t keep him off my left hand,” Witter said. “I battled through for a few rounds, but the pressure kept coming,
and finally, I couldn’t keep doing it.” “It wasn’t that I wanted to quit, I wanted to win. I don’t think it was my last fight. I have to decide which way I’m going now and how to go about it.”
Witter’s corner indicated the fight was over and Junior did not object, but rushed off his stool to the winner’s corner to congratulate Alexandra.
Devon Alexander 22, now as a record of 19-0 and rumors are doing the rounds that the Amir Khan camp were looking very closely at this fight with regards to fighting the winner.
It is a win win situation for Khan, if Witter would have won, then an all British unification fight would have been big, but that ones out of the window.
