Craig Watson
It was a Commonwealth crowning for Manchester tonight when local boy Denton Vassell  claimed the vacant Commonwealth Welterweight title with a unanimous points verdict over Lee Purdy, whilst two day substitute Craig Watson produced a devastating two rounds of boxing to stop the dangerous Badru Lusambya.

Watson knocked down his opponent four times on his way to becoming a two-weight champion of the Commonwealth. Watson certainly didn’t look like a boxer who had stepped in at late notice and produced accurate powerfull shots early to shake Lusambya and stop him in a sound performance in Wigan.

Vassell and Purdy both contributed to what was a magnificent fight, with no fighter backing up, and no break in the action, both came out of this fight with high credit, and talk of a rematch is a possiblity. Vassell took the decision on all three judges’ scorecards, winning 117-112, 115-114, 117-111.
