Audley Harrison |
Audley Harrison says the desire is still burning bright, despite his disappointing performance against David Haye on Saturday night.
.
In the biggest opportunity of his boxing life, Harrison froze in his challenge for Haye’s WBA heavyweight title, getting stopped in round 3 and managing only to throw one jab in resistance.
.
Speaking in an in an interview with SkySports, Harrison said he was disappointed with himself and gives Haye credit for beating him, in what he calls a boxing chess match, but wouldn’t rule out trying to resurrect his shattered career and reputation
.
“I feel disappointed with myself that I didn’t get going, didn’t get to show all the training I done, the game plan that we worked on, to take over the fight later on and didn’t get to that point, so I’m obviously disappointed, but I’ve been disappointed before in my life and no doubt I’ll be disappointed many times in the future.” said Harrison.
.
“I’ll take it on the chin, David Haye I give him credit, he’s a champion, defended his belt, he took the initiative, got the knockdown and it was a disappointment I wasn’t able to carry on, but you know it is what it is at this stage.” he added.
.
.
Asked what the future holds for him, Harrison who feels regardless of his career losses, he as never took a beating in the ring and pats himself on the back for his determination in winning the Prizefighter and the European title, which in turn set up his fight with Haye, but adds his mission is still not complete.
.
Father time catches up with you, injuries have definitely taken their toll, but my mission is not complete, I really have to sit down and take some time off and think about what I want to do, I haven’t been beaten up in the ring throughout my whole career because of my style.
.
“Like I say I’m not a gung ho type fighter, but I haven’t achieved that goal and I felt that I was good enough to achieve that goal, so I’m going to have to sit down, be honest with myself, my age, my injuries, but that desire is still burning in me.
Haye and Harrison in the build up to the fight |
“I haven’t slept much, last night just thinking about what could have been.” he added Part of me pats myself on the back, from last year looking at prizefighter before I entered Prizefighter I sat down with Eddie Hearn and I said look, I want to be fighting for the world title in twelve month’s, I wanna go for the world title, and that desire is still burnt in me deep and bright.
.
“Doing the Prizefighter was baby step’s and then winning the European title against Michael Sprott and having to deal with the adversity of my shoulder popping out, I still stayed in there I said no way am I quiting and I found a way, losing on all three judges cards I knocked him out in the twelfth round.
.
“Then I had to have the operation and the surgeon was not optimistic but I said no let’s go for it, lets do it, I just kept pushing on and then this fight with David Haye wasn’t 100% locked in, but I beat the drum, yes lets do this, let’s make the fight and I managed to get the fight, I went to training camp fifteen weeks in total away from my family.
.
“Ive got a great set of boys around me, training team around me and we all paid the price so I really felt good about that, I wasn’t just blowing hot air, I felt good about it and I paid the price, I stood on that starting line I walked out there feeling good.
.
“Credit to David Haye, he took the initiative, I’m not a gung ho type of guy, I’m a box fighter, counter puncher, I make people make mistakes and make them pay I wasn’t able to do that, and David landed the shot in that third round.
.
I felt good going in there, got myself in a state where I felt mentally and physically ready to do it
.
First round I felt I had him where I wanted him, he wasn’t sure to come forward like a chess match like its been with me and David when we have sparred sometimes.
.
“But you know he took the initiative third round come in and landed a shot, put me down and if I wanted an easy way out, I could have taken it there, but I beat the count comfortably and Davis opened up and he stopped the fight, but I could have carried on.”
