‘Big Bad’ John McDermott blasted out ‘The War Machine’ Larry Olubamiwo at 1:15 of the first round to win the Southern Area title on the undercard of Frankie Gavin vs Michael Lomax at the York Hall, Bethnall Green tonight.
McDermott has had his ups and downs throughout his career and was written off again in this fight. But the seasoned nice guy, quietly went about the task and the first telling shot he landed on Olumbiwo shook him and then a chopping right bang on the jaw had Olubamiwo on the canvas. He rose only to be dropped again by a barrage from McDermott. The writing was now on the wall now and although Olubamiwo bravely got up again, the referee waved it off.
A disappointing Olubamiwo, who looked the part until the bell rang and then he looked every bit the novice against the experienced campaigner from Essex McDermott, who takes his record to 26,7-17ko’s and will now look to get a British title fight and a possible rubber match with Tyson Fury.
“I knew he was gonna come, but that’s what I was training for left right uppercut left hook. I knew he would come rushing forward.” McDermott told SkySports.
“I hit him with a left hook, but I missed him with the uppercut but I saw him wobble, experience I just kept on him and on him and on him . I knew in the end Id catch him with a good shot.
“He was throwing big shots trying to knock me out still but it just left him open for more.”
“I went out there to box, he came to fight so I thought ‘lets have it then’ I caught him with a good shot and I wasn’t going to let him off the hook no way.” added McDermott.
It is less than sure though were Olubamiwo will go from here. The Hackney man was being touted as a prospect to look out for and pundits were saying that he could possibly be the pick of the heavyweight hopes coming through. But in the big boys division a good chin is a must and it is difficult to see him progressing past this level.
