martin murray british boxer

If Martin Murray can find a way to defeat WBC World Middleweight champion and the divisions No1 Sergio Martinez on April 27th in the champions backyard, at the 50,000-seater Club Atletico Velez Sarsfield in Buenos Aires, Argentina, it will be up there with the greatest triumphs of a British boxer fighting abroad.

Up there with Lloyd Honeghan’s 6th round stoppage in 1986 over the P4P king of the time Don Curry. Or when John H Stracey shocked the world in 1975, taking the WBC welterweight title off the phenomenal champion Jose Napoles (TKO6) in Mexico City.

Other notable wins for British fighter’s abroad that spring to mind are Kirkland Laing’s amazing win over Roberto Duran, when the Gifted One bamboozled a prime ‘Hands of Stone’ over ten rounds to take a decision in the Ring Magazines ‘Upset of 1982’

Or that fantastic day in 1970 when Ken Buchanan won the WBA lightweight title outpointing Panamanian legend Ismael Laguna in the fierce heat of the Hiram Bithorn Stadium, San Juan in Puerto Rico. Before and since there are other examples of great feats by our countries boxers and unforgettable victories on away ground and Murray would be joining an illustrious list of fighters if he can upset the odds in Argentina.

For Martinez, this will be his first fight in his home country since 2002 and is expected to be welcomed home like the hero he has become. Recently the champion was voted ‘Argentinian Sportsman of the Year’ beating football idol Lionel Messi! Such is his popularity and a win for Murray would send shock-waves through Argentina and the boxing world.

On the video below, BoxNation’s Steve Lillis speaks to Murray about his training camp, how he will approach Martinez’ southpaw style and how the atmosphere in Argentinean, in-front of a partisan crowd will effect his focus? Steve also speaks to Murray’s promoter, former world champion Ricky Hatton. The Hitman is confident in his man and believes Murray has the tools and the mindset to cause an upset that will be up there with the best of them.
