While at the public workout in Leeds for local hero Josh Warrington’s fight against Kiko Martinez on Saturday night, we saw another local Leeds fight hero in the crowd, one from a different era, Carl Johanneson.
The crowd that had gathered to watch Leeds boxers Josh Warrington and Nicola Adams put through their paces, were mostly unaware that the humble former British champion and Lonsdale belt winner out right, Johaneson was standing at the back taking it all in.
In his career Carl was a real fans favourite and crowd pleaser with his hard as nails never say die attitude. A tough competitor in the ring, but shy and softly spoken out of it, a legend on the fight circuit between 2000 and 2012.
Carl shared the ring with some top level opposition in his day, including Kevin Mitchell, Martin Gethin, Gary Sykes, Carl Greaves, plus he holds British title wins over former world champions Ricky Burns and Michael Gomez.
We took the opportunity to grab a few words with Carl to ask him about Josh Warrington’s rise and see how he was getting on. Now helping out with a bit of coaching at a local gym, Carl was in good spirits and told us who the best opponent was he shared the ring with.
