Former European and British champion and one of the North West’s most loved fighters, John Murray emphasised his belief that Callum Smith can defeat Canelo Alvarez in their super fight this month.
Murray was keen to underline that Smith’s size and fearsome punch power can be pivotal in him overwhelming the pound-for-pound king and forcing a stoppage win.
He stated: “He’s massive at the weight, he’s super strong, I’ve trained with him and he is a good inside fighter. He’s got a chance, he has got a big chance, if he can get into the fight and just keep it tight early, watch them power shots.
“Joe Gallagher is a good trainer, he will know what Canelo is all about and he will have done his homework. Smith is a proper professional – he trains and works hard, he is a proper fighter. So, he’s got every chance in this fight and I don’t think anyone should write him off.”
Murray went onto underline his scepticism over whether Smith will get a decision against Canelo in the US, he did, however, state if he wins and doesn’t get the decision ‘everyone will know and it won’t damage his reputation one bit’.
