If the challenge facing Farouk Daku wasn’t clear on paper it revealed itself at the weigh in. Light-heavyweight Shakan Pitters stands at six foot six, Daku is around five foot ten. Yet despite the height difference and Shakan Pitters’ enviable record (15-1-0), the Ugandan is adamant:

“I’m expecting to win!”

Daku has fought in the UK once before, when he took Chad Sugden the distance in Nottingham. The light-heavyweight has promised better this time, saying things weren’t quite right for the Sugden fight but the problem he had in that bout isn’t with him now.

“Expect to see the best of myself!”

Daku on Friday’s fight.

Daku’s career has been fought all over the world. From French Polynesia to Montenegro, the light-heavy has fought in thirteen different countries over forty fights. No manager, no promoter Daku has travelled across the planet from his adopted home of Amsterdam.

A victory over Shakan Pitters would be vindication for the Ugandan who feels he has much to show the British public. Daku doesn’t see himself as the easy fight Pitters is expecting, the Sugden fight not being a fair reflection of his ability. In the eyes of the light-heavy Pitters has underestimated the challenge he will face.

“There’s no-one like Farouk Daku!”

You can’t knock Daku’s confidence but there is little to indicate that shock will come on Friday night. Shakan Pitters heads into the contest off a knockout win against Jermaine Springer in the same Skydome arena. His sole defeat came against Craig Richards in a tight fight that was ended in devastating fashion.

Pitters possesses a stinging jab and will have his eyes on returning to British title level. With the light-heavyweight division thriving in Britain, Pitters will hope to overcome Daku and cast his eyes further to some exciting future matchups.

Hosea Burton (26-2-0), Lewisham-based Dan Azeez (13-0-0)and maybe even a potential Craig Richards (16-2-1) rematch remain options for a former British champion hoping to catapult himself back into title contention. Farouk Daku will try his best to put paid to those ambitions this Friday night on Channel 5.
