Central Area super-featherweight champion Michael Gomez Jnr made the first defence of his title after ten pulsating rounds against Brian Phillips in Oldham.
The contest concluded with referee Darren Sarginson’s 96-95 scorecard in favour of the champion Gomez Jnr after a nip-and-tuck affair between the two men.
The pace was frenetic throughout as both men enjoyed success in front of a boisterous Oldham crowd. Neither man budged in their pursuit of the title and the close nature of the fight meant that one man was going to be leaving the ring disappointed.
The Mancunian looked to have produced the cleaner, more effective work but both men emerge in a positive light after a superb showing in the North-West.
“I’ll give Brian a lot of respect. He had to come tonight and give it his all, it was my first ten-rounder. I told everyone, I will go out on a stretcher regardless and that’s what I was willing to do tonight”, said Gomez Jr following his win.
“I’ll give him a rematch but now I think it’s time to give the Central Area up, I think I’m past that now. Let Brian fight for that and I’ll go on and fight for whatever I’ve got to do, and then maybe we’ll run it back.”
The Liverpudlian Phillips expressed his disappointment to BBTV in the immediate aftermath of the fight. “It was a good fight, the fans loved it. But I didn’t like the decision. I’m heartbroken”, said Phillips.
“F*** Gomez, I’m not arsed about no one”, said Phillips about a potential rematch. “I’m here for me. I want titles whoever it’ll be. I really don’t care who it is. I’ve been in there with everyone.”
The undercard on Saturday night saw super-bantamweight Zak Miller run out a comfortable winner in his six-round against late opponent Brett Fidoe.
Linzi Buczynskyj emerged victorious at featherweight against Riya Rani over six rounds, while cruiserweight Francis Kershaw secured a second-round stoppage of Ryan Hibbert on his debut.
