American trainer Derrick James is the frontrunner to become Anthony Joshua’s new trainer according to Chris McKenna of the Daily Star.

Joshua has been touring American gyms since his rematch defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in August and spent time with James in December.

The Briton will train with James in the States at his Dallas, Texas Gym in preparation for a mooted comeback in April.

James is regarded as one of the best trainers in the sport.

The 50-year-old has twice won the Ring Magazine Trainer of the Year award (2017, 2020) and has masterminded the success of pound-for-pound stars Errol Spence Jnr and Jermell Charlo.

Joshua has seemingly split with Robert Garcia who co-trained the 33-year-old for his rematch with Usyk alongside Angel Fernandez.

The Brit’s next fight will mark three separate training teams in as many outings as the former two-time heavyweight champion looks for another shot at world honours in 2023.
