WBO super-lightweight champion Josh Taylor is reportedly ‘close’ to agreeing fight with Teofimo Lopez Jr in Scotland, according to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger.
A potential fight between the pair is being looked at for Easter Road in Edinburgh.
May 27th and June 3rd are two potential dates.
Taylor was initially set to rematch Jack Catterall following the former’s controversial victory over the Englishman in February last year.
The fight was penned for March 4th in Glasgow before Taylor was forced to pull out with an injury to his foot.
Reports initially suggested the rematch could be rearranged for later this year.
Rumours began to circulate this week however that a match-up against former lightweight champion Lopez Jr was now the focus.
The 25-year-old Lopez edged Spain’s Sandor Martin after ten close rounds in December.
The Brooklyn native shocked the boxing world in October 2020 when he overcame pound-for-pound star Vasiliy Lomachenko via unanimous decision.
The wheels came hurtling off the Lopez Jr hype train 13 months later however when he was dropped and eventually defeated on points by George Kambosos Jr in New York.
Catterall meanwhile is scheduled to return in Manchester on March 25th.
The Chorley man now appears to be targeting a showdown with WBC super-lightweight champion Regis Prograis.
