Frankie Gavin – By Al Stevenson
Welterweight Frankie Gavin made his comeback at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena on the undercard of Nathan Cleverly vs. Tommy Karpency on Saturday.
Opponent Kevin McIntyre was unable to answer the referee’s count after a thudding body shot left him crouching in agony. With seconds to go in the third round, the contest was called off, and an elated Gavin looked to be in top form.
‘Funtime’ is now 12-0 as a professional, and is determined to put his personal problems behind him. Having pulled out of his last fight due to his difficulties, the welterweight claims he is now back on track and looking ahead to further challenges.
The British prospect appeared in fine shape during the three rounds of action out of a scheduled eight. Gavin knows he must maintain his positive outlook and hard work ethic if he is to make up ground following a break from the sport. A win over veteran McIntyre will boost the Birmingham welterweight’s confidence as he aims to push to the top of his division.
