Legendary boxing trainer Emanuel Steward who coached Britain’s Lennox Lewis to unrivaled success, as well as Prince Naseem Hamed and Dennis Andries, remains in the care of doctors and is still alive, according to his sister, despite numerous disturbing reports of his passing that have surfaced on the Internet today.

that… My prayers are with my friend for full recovery.’
– Lennox Lewis.

I have been in contact with his sister, Diane Steward-Jones, who issued the following statement via text to me at 11:25am Thursday morning, reported Tom Leyden of wxyz.com
“You can tell folks that he is alive and being treated by some of the best experts in the world.  The Steward family is dismayed and greatly disheartened and disappointed that during this personally challenging time, people would callously and thoughtlessly run wild with untrue statements in order to garner their ’15 minutes of fame. said Diane.

“Where is the moral compass of those seeking to capitalise on this situation? Does anybody take the time to check out the facts anymore?
“Many of those issuing reckless statements have our phone numbers as well as Emanuel’s office number and yet, they haven’t called, just issued statements that are terrorizing Emanuel’s children, siblings and relatives that aren’t able to be here at the hospital.
“SHAME ON THEM!  He has feelings and we, his family, have feelings.  Consider that and give us our privacy to help our loved ones.”
The 68 year-old Steward has been battling an unspecified illness over the past few months and the family has asked for prayers for his recovery.
It was reported late Wednesday on the website of the Detroit Free Press that Steward recently underwent surgery for diverticulosis.
Steward began training boxers at the Kronk gym, Detroit in 1971 and in that time worked with many fighters from grass roots through to established world champions and many genres in-between, he is a true undoubted legend of the game and it has been a sad day for many fans, but the confusion of his death made it worse.
Some of the names Steward trained over the years includes Thomas Hearns, Hilmer Kenty, Lennox Lewis, Gerald McClellan, James Toney, Michael Moorer, Naseem Hamed, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Mike McCallum, Jermain Taylor, Wilfred Benítez, Julio Cesar Chavez, Andy Lee, Oscar De La Hoya, Evander Holyfield, Miguel Cotto, the McCrory brothers, Frank Tate, Wladimir Klitschko, Miguel Cotto, Oscar de la Hoya, Cornelius “K9” Bundrage and many many more..
Emanuel was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997 and is also a member of the World Boxing Hall of Fame. He has served as a ringside analyst for HBO’s coverage of boxing for many years, he is a legend of the sport and he deserves to be treated that way.
Our former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis today vented his anger and frustration about the rumours of his friend and former trainers death and was reluctant to believe the shocking news when he Tweeted, ‘If you remember, thanks to Twitter, I’ve been dead at least twice. #rumormill
‘As far as I know, @emsnuelstward is still recovering from his illness with his family by his side.
‘Ppl need 2get their info from credible news sources…and so called credible news sources shouldn’t use Twitter as a source.
‘I feel like flying to Detroit and personally dealing with ppl at the #DetroitFreePress #FAIL
‘Today has been an emotional roller coaster. I wish Manny’s family had used twitter or website to set record straight.’
‘I don’t have confirmation directly from Mannys family. Until I get that… My prayers are with my friend for full recovery.’ added Lewis.
BritishBoxers.co.uk wish Mr Steward and swift and full recovery. #BoxingLegend
