Jamie McDonnell |
The Nicaraguan’s corner threw in the towel at the end of the eighth round after Doncaster’s McDonnell finally ground down his last minute foe, after the withdrawal of original opponent Vusi Malinga.
Zamora put up a good show after taking the fight on short notice and proved to be a tough and tricky obstacle for McDonnell to overcome. But in the end the British and European champion’s weight advantage and accurate punch variety were too much for the imported Zamora and McDonnell shown his class and world ranking credentials to wear him down and out.
McDonnell is now ready to take his world title opportunity and after working his way through the rankings while winning British, European and Commonwealth titles he is deserving of a crack.
“The pressure was massive out there, but I knew what I could do, I know I’m the best in the world and now I have to prove it, I thought I had beat him, but he kept coming back.” said McDonnell after the fight.
