2014 has the potential to be an excellent year for the always-entertaining Coldwell Boxing. Here are six fighters from the ever-expanding Yorkshire-based outfit who are expected to figure prominently over the next twelve months
Liam Hanrahan
One of British boxing’s most well-supported boxers, Macclesfield’s Liam Hanrahan has yet to disappoint his dedicated following as he has raced to 5-0 since making his professional debut back in 2012. A minor hand injury at the backend of 2013 slightly halted Hanrahan’s rapid progress and he’ll be desperate to make up for lost time when he resumes his career in February. Promoter Dave Coldwell believes titles are within Hanrahan’s grasp in 2014.
“Liam has shown me that he’s a quick learner and that he can adapt to tough situations,” said Coldwell. “His three first victories were all impressive stoppages and it’s easy for a young boxer to go into every fight looking for the knockout. Liam went the distance in his 4th outing when stepped up against experienced international opposition but he did it with real class. He didn’t rush in and make mistakes by trying to get his opponent out of there. He was relaxed and he was mature. It’s refreshing to see that in a young fighter and that convinced me that he’s not far from a step-up.”
Chad Gaynor
2013 was the year that Rotherham’s Chad Gaynor showcased his wide talents to a large audience when he excelled in a quality welterweight version of Prizefighter twelve months ago. Gaynor was narrowly defeated in the semi-final against eventual winner, Glenn Foot, but the way he performed was met with tons of admiration throughout the boxing community.
The 147lb division in Britain is simmering well at this current moment and there are plenty of opportunities that lie ahead for Gaynor. Many are desperate to see a rematch with Foot over the longer distance and that could become a reality in 2014 with the possibility of a title also being at stake. Gaynor has certainly proved that he has the class to succeed and he also has the look and personality to potentially become a crossover star.
Rod Smith
Possessing a basic 4-0 ledger and conceding a wealth of both amateur and professional experience to his opponent, Liam Cameron, Rod Smith discarded his foe’s credentials as he captured the vacant International Masters middleweight title in December when the pair met in a closely fought Sheffield derby which was decided by a solitary point. The victory for Smith created a ripple in the Yorkshire fight scene and Coldwell is confident that his charge can build on his most impressive win to date.
“I knew from the moment I made the fight between Smith and Cameron that he could go in there and cause an upset. You take the world class guys out of the scenario and the domestic middleweight scene is wide open and Rod Smith is now a part of that group of contenders who want to push onto the next level. Not many gave him a chance against Cameron, especially over the ten round distance, but it was great to see him go in there and prove so many wrong.”
Maxi Hughes
Another Coldwell Boxing star who received wide applause from Boxing’s family in 2013 was Maxi Hughes. The Rossington prospect contested the Central Area lightweight championship with Matchroom’s highly-rated Scott Cardle back in April and despite losing a points decision to the Blackpool man, Hughes displayed great ambition and proved that he certainly has the skills and character to emerge once again in title class.
Hughes has also relocated to South Wales to link up with rising trainer, Gary Lockett, and thus far, the results have paid dividends. Hughes is desperate for further belt opportunities and will be campaigning at super-featherweight in 2014.
Nav Mansouri
The current English light-middleweight champion, Sheffield’s Nav Mansouri had a more than satisfactory 2013 which included a resounding victory over former British title challenger, Max Maxwell, and his victory over Tyan Booth which brought him the aforementioned national glory. The only slight knock on a perfect for twelve months for Mansouri was a technical draw verdict against Matthew Mallin in October when the Barnsley brawler was cut following an accidental clash of heads. The pair will renew hostilities on Coldwell Boxing’s first show of 2014 at Ice Sheffield on February 7th.
Robbie Davies Jnr
Arguably Coldwell Boxing’s signing of 2013. The outstanding Liverpool amateur relinquished his treasured Knowsley Vale vest when it became apparent that a place on the privileged Great Britain squad was unlikely despite a stellar unpaid record that resulted in a multiple honours and a vast array of international appearances. Pursued by several promoters, Davies selected Dave Coldwell to guide his professional dreams and that decision looks a solid one as the Kirkby youngster has advanced to 4-0 since making his paid bow back in June.
