‘Turbo’ Terry Flanagan the unbeaten former English and Prizefighter champion, will get the opportunity this Saturday night to finally accomplish a dream him and his coach Steve Maylett set out to achieve on new years day 2008.

The Manchester lightweight 24-0, will step in the ring at the Manchester Phones 4U Arena against former champion Martin Gethin for the vacant British title in the best shape of his pro career, that started in January 2009.

It has been a patient waiting game for Flanagan and his team to get this title shot, after being overlooked and avoided on many occasions, such is his slick southpaw skills and not many of the division champions and contenders have been willing to risk it against this determined Mancunian. But that waiting game is over and Flanagan knows he must now deliver the goods and take advantage leaving nothing in the ring on the night.

Terry ‘Turbo’ Flanagan

The Manchester Arena is a 5-minute walk from his Ancoats front door and when he graces the ring in front of his army of fans, it will be a far cry from the days when he had to sneak into the arena in 2005 and ended up getting all the way to ringside to watch his hero Ricky Hatton take the IBF light-welterweight title from Kostya Tszyu.

On Saturday night Flanagan might not be challenging for the world title but this is a step in that direction and if he can come through this test against Walsall’s impressive Gethin, then a world title fight of his own could be down the line one day and this time he wouldn’t have to sneak in! British Boxers have followed Terry’s career from day one and have seen him progress under Maylett at a rapid pace.

He has been simmering over in the gym, learning, growing, maturing and now the years of waiting have finally paid off and he couldn’t have asked for better timing, the British title at his home arena.

Flanagan, 25, and his coach know that Gethin will not be an easy nights work for them but have a confidence and belief that this is their time to finally show the boxing world what they have known for a while, Terry Flanagan is a champion in the making.

We have spent sometime around the training camp in the build up to this fight and watched Flanagan whip himself into tip top shape, here is a video we put together of Flanagan and Maylett’s thought’s on the fight and a confident prediction from Flanagan on how he expects to defeat Gethin on the night. Plus a few pigeons!
