Fresh off his British, European and Commonwealth title defence against British rival Chris Eubank Jnr. Hatfield’s Billy Joe Saunders (pic) will take on newly crowned world champion Andy Lee for his WBO middleweight title in 2015.
Lee claimed the vacant title when he stopped the previously unbeaten Russian Matt Korobov in the 6th round in Las Vegas on December 13th with a scintillating performance.
Unbeaten Saunders who is of Irish travelling blood like Lee showed great boxing skills and heart and toughness to defeat the very good Eubank Jnr and proved he is now worthy and capable of his world title shot after cleaning up on the domestic and European scene and the governing body have now confirmed his next fight will be the big one early next year.
“Please be advised that the parties have 30 days (starting on December 13, the date in which Mr Lee won the WBO middleweight championship of the world) to negotiate an agreement for the WBO championship bout between Andy Lee and Billy Joe Saunders.” said the WBO in a statement on their website today.
“If an accord is not reached between January 12, 2015, a purse bid will be ordered.”
Saunders, 25 is a southpaw the same as the 30-year-old champion Lee and it will be the first time, at least in modern day boxing, that two men of travelling stock will contest a world title.
