The brilliant Carl Frampton claimed the WBA world featherweight crown on Saturday night in New York by beating defending champion Leo Santa Cruz on points to become Northern Ireland’s first two-weight world champion at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn..

Frampton, 29, was declared the winner in a captivating contest that matched t’s pre-fight billing. This was a real fight between two world class boxers with total respect for the other. It was a refreshing change to watch two men go about it the right way, before, during and after.

The Belfast man made a great start to the fight and rocked Santa Cruz in the second round to stamp his authority early. Santa Cruz was his usual busy self but it was Frampton’s punches that were more telling, quality over quantity.

The first judge scored the fight a 114-114 draw, while the remaining two had Frampton the winner, 116-112 and 117-111. Santa Cruz.

Well done Carl Frampton, British boxing’s 14th world champion, a credit to the sport and a genuine bona-fide world class boxer.
