Lee Selby’s IBF world featherweight title defence against Johnny Barros has been called off because the challenger failed his medical on Friday, a day before the schedule fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The British champion was almost in tears when he spoke to MC Jimmy Lennon Jr on stage at the weigh-in for Saturdays anticipated show, where Carl Frampton vs Luis Santa Cruz II tops the bill.

Barros was ruled unfit to fight by the Nevada State Athletic Commission leaving Selby, who was excited about the prospect of making his Vegas debut absolutely devastated and apologetic to his legion of fans who have made the trans Atlantic trip to support the Barry fighter.

“I’m very appreciative to my fans for travelling over here to watch me fight,” said Selby.

“I’m terribly sorry, I’m almost in tears. This was my big stage and my chance to shine.”

Selby hopes to arrange another defence before hopefully facing fellow world champion Carl Frampton in Belfast in the summer.

“Hopefully I can get a quick warm-up fight before possibly facing Carl Frampton,” he added.

Gutted for Lee!!
