Having both recently signed with Matchroom, prospects Zelfa Barrett and Aqib Fiaz are preparing to begin the next chapter of their careers under unusual circumstances.
The exciting duo will make their Matchroom debut at the newly branded ‘Matchroom Square Garden’ with both facing tough opposition behind closed doors. In an interview with BBTV, Hearn lauded both for taking the fights and emphasised they both have a big future with the city of Manchester behind them
Hearn said: “We signed Zelfa coming into this, he was supposed to box on the Whyte vs Povetkin card in Manchester, I really like him and I think he has all the ability to be the new star in the City of Manchester.
“You saw over the last six months, Anthony Crolla and Scott Quigg both depart from the sport, two guys that have consistently been the biggest ticket sellers in Manchester. Now you have two guys in Aqib Fiaz, who is a massive ticket seller and Zelfa Barrett with his story, his look and his style, who can be big stars in Manchester.”
Looking ahead to Barrett’s inaugural contest as a Matchroom fighter, he added: “This is a really tough contest for him against Eric Donovan, who was a fantastic amateur and sees this is a golden opportunity, but if Zelfa can come in and look good.
“Again for Aqib, tough fighting Kane Baker, who is on a good run at the moment, it’s a tough fight. But, I like that he has taken that and I think there are big futures in Manchester for Zelfa and Aqib.”
