WBO super-middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders is free to box again after the British Boxing Board of Control (BBOC) lifted the suspension he received four months ago.

Saunders was sanctioned with a £15,000 for a controversial video posted on social media, which the fighter claimed was a joke. He has also stated he will donate a further £25,000 to charity.

A statement on behalf of the Board outlined: “Billy Joe Saunders appeared before Stewards of the Board on Wednesday, 22nd July 2020 due to recent comments made on Social Media.

“Following consideration of Mr. Saunders’ explanation, the Stewards found Mr. Saunders guilty of misconduct and have fined him £15,000.00p to be donated to charities.

“The suspension of his boxer’s license has been lifted.”

Having withdrawn from negotiations with Canelo earlier in the month, the ruling frees up Saunders to enter into some major fights at super-middleweight, with Demetrius Andrade and Callum Smith both potential opponents.
