According to ESPN Mexico, Britain’s Sunny Edwards is close to agreeing a deal to take on Mexico’s Julio Cesar Martinez on October 22nd.

Edwards, who has made two successful defences of his IBF strap since claiming it in a dominant performance against Moruti Mthalane last year, has history with the Mexican with Martinez having fought his older brother Charlie Edwards three years ago. Martinez looked to have snatched Charlie’s WBC flyweight title from him in his own backyard before WBC President Mauricio Suliaman overruled the decision and declared the bout a no contest due to Edwards having been hit when floored. Edwards vacated the title shortly after and the Mexico City man stopped Cristofer Rosales inside nine rounds to become the new WBC flyweight champion in December of 2019.

Martinez was due to defend his strap in a rematch with mandatory challenger McWilliams Arroyo before the former pulled out during fight week due to illness. Arroyo is now set to face Joselito Valesquez on the same card on October 22nd.
