Promoter Eddie Hearn remains optimistic that a fight can be made between Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder in 2023 after enjoying positive talks with the American’s team.

Hearn made the statement in an interview on ID Boxing’s YouTube channel.

Both teams remained locked in talks between 2017 and 2019 but were unable to reach an agreement to land a fight that would have then crowned an undisputed heavyweight champion.

Hearn admits both sides ‘made mistakes’ back then but remains optimistic a deal can be reached this time around.

“I’ve had a couple of nice conversations with Shelly [Finkel, Wilder’s manager] recently. We all made mistakes last time and I’m not going to make that mistake again, so I’m saying nothing. But the communication lines are clear and open.

“I don’t know what’s next but what I can tell you is the relationship and communication is good enough to have hope.”

Alabama’s Wilder has been mandated to fight Andy Ruiz Jnr in a WBC final eliminator with the winner set to take on Tyson Fury.

Finkel told World Boxing News however that Wilder’s preference is a fight with former two-time world champion Joshua next.
