In a recent interview Billy Joe Saunders (30-1,14 KOs) discussed Liam Smith (33-3-1, 20 KOs) as a potential match up for his return to boxing, with Saunders being out of the ring now for almost two years after his defeat to Canelo Alvarez.

Smith responded to this tweeting: ‘You know me Billy, talk to me. I’m open to anything, what weight we talking?’

Saunders has now replied to this, tagging Smith in his Instagram story- ‘12th September I’m ready brother if you have to take the clown out I’ll wait’.

Saunders is referring to the rematch that he may have to wait to take place first between Smith and Chris Eubank Jr (32-3, 23 KOs), with Saunders already having a split decision win over Eubank Jr back in 2014.

This potential domestic clash is very exciting for British boxing fans but still the question of what weight category the bout would be held at is unclear – With Smith predominantly fighting at super welterweight, despite his fight with Eubank Jr been at middleweight, and Billy Joe fighting at Super middleweight in more recent years. Also, with Saunders been known to gain weight between fights and in his time off the question is raised as to whether he could still comfortably make middleweight, particularly with him now been aged 33. However, with both fighters been game and up for a challenge they may well find a place to meet in the middle. The fights occurrence also partly relies on Smith been victorious over Eubank Jr in the upcoming re-match.
