Mauricio Lara has been stripped of his WBA featherweight title after weighing in 3.8lbs over the championship limit.

Only Leigh Wood, who initially headed into the fight as challenger, can win the now vacant title in Manchester on Saturday.

The British Boxing Board of Control told Lara he could not weigh less than 128.5lbs at Friday’s weigh-in as they were unsatisfied with his weight at the mid-fight week check weight on Wednesday.

Lara went on to weigh-in at 129.8lbs compared to Wood, who came in within the championship limit at 125.9lbs.

The WBA released a statement later on Friday confirming that Lara had now been stripped and only Wood can claim the belt providing he’s victorious this weekend.

Lara stopped Wood within seven rounds in February to claim the Nottingham man’s belt and the rematch was soon pencilled in for this weekend.
