The former British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight champion Nicky Piper is organising a great event called ‘Beat the Boxer – Challenge the Champions’ which is being held at the Welsh rugby Union Indoor Training Centre, nr Cardiff on Saturday April 24th at 10am.
It is in aid of The Joshua Foundation children’s cancer charity created in 1998 to provide holidays and experiences for children and their families, where the child is diagnosed with terminal cancer
The champions taking part are Steve Robinson (former world featherweight champion), Enzo Maccarineli (former world cruiserweight champion), Nathan Cleverly (current British & Commonwealth champion – fighting for European title tomorrow night) and Jane Couch (5 times ladies world champion).
Members of the public will pay £10 to enter and for that they will also get a ‘Beat the Boxer’ T-Shirt and a goody bag. The event involves a 10km run and then after that a series of exercises, with every rep completed reducing their run time by 1 second
The exercises will be 2 minutes each of press ups, sit ups, squat thrusts and burpees. Competitors will work in pairs and take turns to do 8 X 1 minutes of the above whilst the other counts.
The first 4 men and first 4 women home get to train at Gym Calzaghe to see how a real champion trains.
Of course, it’s not all about winning, the top 4 fund raisers and 4 entries drawn randomly will also get to train at Gym Calzaghe as well as the ones that do beat the boxers. It’s also, of course, about meeting the boxers, having some fun and raising money for children with cancer. It’s also a chance to see where the Welsh rugby team train!
