GB amateur boxing star Khalid Yafai impressively won a gold medal at the Felix Stamm Memorial tournament in Poland, after beating Moldovan Alexander Riscan 13:9 in the final last week.
Making a strong start strong start in the final bout, Birmingham City Police ABC boxer Yafai caught Riscan with some powerful body shots to start building up his lead. Using good movement to his advantage in a fast paced bout, Khalid issued some troubling left hooks to his opponent, and after two close rounds (3:4 and 6:7) extended his lead with a final flourish to take the 52kg gold medal.
Yafai 22, who is one of Britain’s gold medal hopes for the London 2012 Olympic games, reached the final by beating another, Polish boxer Rajchold Bromboszcz and the favorite to win the competition.
Yafai’s performance and victory over his final two opponent’s on their home turf and in front of a partisan crowd, was another very impressive showing and again worthy, of the midlanders hot prospect potential tag.
Khalid’s younger brother Gamal won the bronze medal at 56kg after narrowly losing out to Irishman John Joe Nevin in the semi finals.
