Irish based Cuban Mike Perez wins Prizefighter trophy

Readings Michael Sprott failed in his bid to win a second Prizefighter trophy on Saturday night, losing a split decision in his first contest against eventual finalist Tye fields, in the first International Heavyweight helping of the one night boxing show at the Alexandra Palace by Matchroom Sport.

Sprott’s conqueror the 6′ 8″ Fields was eventually knocked-out in the first round of the final by Irish based Cuban Mike Perez who was crowned the champion on the night.

Perez unbeaten now in 16 fights blasted his way to the final with victory over Kerston Maxwell (points 30-25) before stopping Frenchman Gregory Tony in the first round in the semi final and then another quick finish over Fields to land the £32,000 prize and sets his sights on a shot at the heavyweight title.
“I got better (as the night went on). Perez told SkySports after the final bout.
“I will send the money to my mum in Cuba and then take my fiancee and young daughter out for dinner.

“Hopefully after this big win I will get a world title fight against David Haye or Wladimir Klitschko, whoever.” added Perez.

Danny McIntosh losses his European Title in first defence in Germany
Danny McIntosh losses his belt

Norwich’s Danny McIntosh has lost his European light-heavyweight crown in his first defence, stopped in round eight by German Eduard Gutknecht in Neubrandenburg on Saturday night.

McIntosh, had claimed the title with a late stoppage over Thierry Karl in Paris in January, looked set for another victory on away soil early on until the pendulum swung dramatically in Gutknecht’s favour after halfway.

McIntosh (12st 5lbs) was his usual relaxed self in the early exchanges but his lax defence offered encouragement to Guknecht (12st 6 ¾ lbs) from the outset. A left hook – right hand combination forced Danny to cover up against the ropes as the bell sounded to end the opening session. Guknecht, adopting a classically European style, looked unremarkable despite his impressive 20-1 (8) record (his only loss being to WBO super-middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz on points last year), but was strong and wasted little. In contrast, McIntosh constantly loaded up and was breathing heavily from the second round. read a full report on the fight at Boxrec News by Ben Carey.
