Chris Eubank Jnr – By Glen Harris

Chris Eubank Jnr. made his professional debut last week (Nov 12) at Event City in Manchester. The son of former world champion ‘Simply the Best’ Chris Eubank the elder, looks to be a chip off the old block and showcased his talent’s by stopping Lithuanian Kirilas Psonko in the fourth round.

Eubank 21, from Brighton is now coached by his dads old side kick Ronnie Davies, since leaving Scott Welch’s Brighton and Hove boxing gym. Eubank has signed promotional papers with Mick Hennessy and Channel 5 will be screening the fights of this real British boxing talent for the foreseeable future.

The old man was with his son on the night, even sharing the ring walk with his boy to the familiar sounds of ‘Simply the Best’ the Tina Turner song that he would strut to the ring to in his heyday. Big Chris lead the entrance to the arena and it was all publicity and good promoting to use his fathers status to launch a new brand of Eubank.

But Eubank the younger is his own man now, a boxer of talents and after the opening fight of this second coming, he should be able to now to let his own immense talents and individual swagger shine through in it’s own right. – The song is fine, it was great to hear it and smashing to see Chris looking so well. – The former world champion and British boxing legend is a proud father and junior will always be known and judged on what his dad achieved, but from what I have seen of him to date, the Eubank legacy is in good hands!

Eubank Jnr as been adopting his dads, jump over the top rope act during his amateur career and that is how he entered the pro ranks, landing on the canvas and rolling the shoulders with a flurry of uppercuts, before retreating into a statue es pose, surveying his surroundings with a poker fight face! – All is apparent, junior has got his dads mental powers, self discipline and the focus that is needed to be a successful pugilist. Added to that a sprinkling of theatrical dramatization and skills in abundance, he is certainly one to watch!

But when the bell goes, Eubank is a different type of fighter to his dad. He has very fast hands and throws the combinations in a well schooled, real boxing manner. Where as dad could sometimes use counter punching and work in spurts, junior looks a more natural boxer and if he also possesses dads fighting resolve, courage and chin, we could have a future middleweight world champion on the books.

Unfortunately Kirilas Psonko his debut opponent, wasn’t anything but a moving heavy bag with two arms and didn’t offer much, if anything back in the way of punches thrown or landed. Eubank didn’t go looking for the knockout and to be fair to Psonko, he held a water tight, peek a boo defence, but never let go, even to throw a decent shot.

With just 22 amateur fights behind him, you would have thought he was of more season the way he boxed and in his demeanour and style. Eubank circled his man and from the off set flicking out his lighting fast jab and proceeded to use an array of combinations, screw left uppercut leads, lead right hands and the like.

Looking in great physical shape and sharp as razor, Eubank only had to go through the motions really against the lackluster offence of Psonko. He never went looking for the power shots, but it was turning into a sustained going over of the durable Lithuanian who’s eyes began to swell, such was the succession of leather landing.

Subsequently at 1:46 in round four, referee Michael Alexander had seen enough of this one sided event and as Psonko retreated to the ropes, almost going into a defensive like shell again, as the ref waved it off, Psonko was proud and never gave in, but he was out of his depth against the talented debutant. – Watch out for Chris Eubank Jnr, ‘He could turn out to be Simply the Best’
