Liverpool’s Liam Smith meets fellow undefeated prospect Ronnie Heffron in a British welterweight title eliminator at Oldham Sports Centre on May 18 on a Queensberry Promotions and Steve Wood’s VIP Promotions bill.
The contest will be shown live on BoxNation (Sky channel 456 and Virgin 546) as part of their new BoxAcademy series. “It’s fantastic to announce our second BoxAcademy show, which features for me, a potential domestic fight of the year,” said George Warren of Queensberry Promotions when speaking about the fight to Britishboxers.co.uk.
“Liam and Ronnie deserve the utmost respect for taking this fight and it will be very tough to pick a winner between the pair, who, in my opinion, can both go on and win championship honours. With Callum Johnson also featuring, fans will get the opportunity to see some of the best talent from the North West. It’s great to be working with Steve Wood on this event and seeing some of his young charges fight live on TV”
Heffron holds a perfect 9-0 (5) record, he hails from Oldham and will enjoy a lot of local support. Liam, though, will bring over plenty of vocal Liverpudlian fans, his record reads 9-0-1 (4) – the sole blemish a 38-38 draw with Terry Carruthers in September 2010.
Heffron is trained by Anthony Farnell, a former pro and two-time WBU world titlist. “Beefy” is guided by Joe Gallagher; the 2008 ABA light-welterweight champion joined Gallagher’s Gym last year and the move has resulted in a run of impressive performances.
Indeed, Gallagher recently told me that the 23-year-old is destined to go far. “Liam Smith is technically one of the best fighters in the country, he is very underrated – he is like Erik Morales with his shot placement,” enthused Gallagher during a recent conversation.
Smith also believes that his time is coming, confidently telling me during a recent interview that he is already ready for the big names at the weight – a claim that will be tested against Heffron. Farnell, however, has bags of belief in his man. “Arnie” feels that the 21-year-old is British boxing’s next big thing and revealed that the youngster studies the game in order to master his trade.
“Some fighters don’t watch fights, but I think they should,” said Farnell when last speaking to Britishboxers.co.uk. “Ronnie is on Youtube all the time checking out Julio Chavez, Miguel Cotto, even guys like Mark Breland, who have a totally different style, but can still teach him things.”
One guy has been compared to Morales, the other watches the greats to pick up tips, both are undefeated and desperate to make the step into title contention – May 18 will answer questions on both sides and produce a future British title challenger.
