4th July 2012

The fight has not yet taken place and the dust is still swirling about the dark sky’s that are lurking above boxing and its future evolution. When the dust finally does settle we hope that it sets into the fabric of the sport deep and some sanity and direction can be found.
Today, and things took another twist when the Luxembourg Boxing Federation issued legal proceedings against the British Boxing Board of Control!

David Haye vs Dereck Chisora as manifested itself into the most controversial fight for many years, certainly on these shores. The British Boxing Board of Control have condemned the fight from taking place and threatened to take action against any of it’s licence holders who take part in any way shape or form in the event being staged at Upton Park in London on July 14.
The BBBofC formed in 1929 from the old National Sporting Club, have had their ups and downs over the years, but have tried to keep boxing just, fare and police the game in this country.
The board had suspended Dereck Chisora’s boxing licence after he was involved in various altercations in the run up to his world title challenge against Vitali Klitschko in Munich in February this year. Chisora’s antics that forced their hand. The slap on Klitschko at the pre fight weigh in and then spitting water into his brothers face in the ring. This was all topped by the well publicised post fight press brawl with former WBA heavyweight champion, but current non licence holder David Haye.

The Board feel Chisora brought the game into disrepute while representing British boxing. But by failing to ban the Londoner, they left the opportunity open for promoter Frank Warren to stage the fight under The Luxembourg Boxing Federation, an unprecedented move and one maybe the Board had considered could happen, but sure it wouldn’t. Well it has and the Board, Frank Warren and The Luxembourg outfit are held in a stand off with claims and counter claims now winging their way back and forth over a fight that IS being recognised by WBO- and WBA-sanctioned bodies.

In the latest episode in this drama, Robert Smith, general secretary of the BBBofC and fight promoter Frank Warren both appeared on BBC’s News Night program last night to air their views and give both sides of the argument.

And today the plot thickened when the Luxembourg board issued legal proceedings against the British Boxing Board for ‘intimidating its own members into not participating in the fight’
Today’s letter issued by the Luxemboug Boxing Federation
The Luxembourg Boxing Federation and a number of licence holders have today issued legal proceedings against the British Boxing Board of Control in relation to its stand over the Haye v Chisora fight on 14 July 2012.  This is not something anyone wanted to do and neither is it a step we took lightly, but we felt we were left with no option.

We have issued proceedings to prevent the Board from intimidating its own members into not participating in the fight.  The Board has admitted that it can do nothing legally to stop the fight but it is still threatening to call its licence-holders to account for their involvement.

The fight is going ahead on 14 July and over 28,000 tickets have been sold.  This is a fight that the public want to see and is being broadcast live in the UK on BoxNation, EPIX in America, Sky Germany and in more the 60 countries.
The fight has also attracted the wrath of the European Boxing Union, who last month confirmed their general assembly had passed a motion that decreed the Luxembourg federation would be thrown out of the European organisation if they continued to back the fight.
Despite that threat, the LBF subsequently voted in favour of backing the bout by eight votes to four at a special general meeting in Luxembourg recently.
