Hosea Burton with top American Boxing coach Freddie Roach at the Wild Card Gym in L.A

As the boxing world eagerly awaits the return to the ring of undefeated heavyweight Tyson Fury on Saturday, another undefeated fighter, and first cousin of Fury, light heavyweight sensation, Hosea ‘The Hammer’ Burton was quietly plodding away, preparing for his next contest on the 22nd of February.

The 2009 ABA Champion has just returned to Trafford from training out in Los Angeles at the world famous Wild Card Gym where he honed his skills under the watchful eye of top professional coach, Freddie Roach.

“It was a great experience for me to go out to LA with my gym mates from Gallagher’s Gym where I train”, said 25 year old Hosea “Joe Gallagher is a brilliant trainer and he took us all to spar and train with the best fighters out in America. I really enjoyed it. I was sparring with Mike Tyson’s son, D’Amato a lot. It was strange to see celebrities coming into the gym like Cuba Gooding Jr and Mickey Rourke but the training and the experience was priceless”.

Since turning professional in 2012, Burton has progressed steadily but his reputation soared when he halted Jahmeene Smyle in one round in 2013. Smyle was intended to be a thorough examination of the Manchester man’s credentials. However, Burton ignored the script and destroyed his opponent in the opening session.

Burton’s trainer Joe Gallagher has high praise for his young fighter “I’ve trained Hosea since he was 11 years old, he’s a great lad and a great talent. He’s totally committed to the sport and he’s always first in the gym and last to leave, you can’t ask for more than that. He’s had a brilliant 2013 and when I took him and the lads to LA to train at Wild Card he really impressed Freddie Roach who, like myself, believes Hosea has all the skills and the heart to go all the way. Out of 9 of my fighters 7 are champions and I believe Hosea will be next to make that 8 champions from our stable very soon”.

Despite the sometimes bad reputation of fighters, Burton comes across as exactly what he is, a quiet, humble family man with good manners and respect. He understands the dog eat dog business of boxing well and is known and respected as the ‘nice guy’ of the sport. He says, “I fight on the 22nd of February at the Ice Arena in Hull which will be live on Sky Sports and then I’d like to go for the English title after that. As a fighter and a man with a family I’m in desperate need for sponsorship as I don’t have any. So if any companies out there want their name and logo on my shorts, gown and all my social media, please do get in touch with me through my website www.hoseaburton.webs.com I would be very grateful for any assistance in this area”.

Operating in the talent-laden light-heavyweight division, opportunities are plentiful for Burton and it’s only a matter of time before the Joe Gallagher student is fighting for big honours.
