Last year when Floyd Mayweather put out to vote the question; ‘Who should I fight next Amir Khan or Marcos Maidana?’ – The fans voted in their thousands in favour of the Brit. The pound for pound recognised king of the ring Mayweather decided to overrule the casting votes and instead faced the majority loser Maidana, outpointing the Argentinian (and again in a rematch)

The questions are asked then, does Mayweather fancy the job against the young fast King Khan at this important late stage of his fantastic career? Mayweather says he is now ready to face his long term nemesis Manny Pacquaio in May but with political influences again making that fight harder to make, Khan is surely a viable option Mayweather as to choose from if the Pacman fight doesn’t happen. (and what a tragedy that would be!)

The fans have already made their opinions heard and Khan believes his global fan base puts him in a good position to bargaining for a fight with the American next year.

Khan is now one of the biggest names in boxing and he cemented the fact last week when he unanimously outpointed Devon Alexander in Las Vegas.

The ball is in Mayweather’s court with Khan recently questioning the five-weight world champion’s desire to face him.

But the 2004 Olympic silver medalist says it is a fight that needs to happen and thinks the worldwide television money it could generate could tempt Mayweather.

“I think I am one of the biggest names in boxing.” Khan told The Bolton News.

“I have huge viewing figures when I fight and a hug fan base in America and worldwide in places like Pakistan and UAE. A Mayweather fight would sell all around the world. That appeal would bring money to the table – more than (Marcos) Maidana or many of his previous fighters. This could generate a lot of money.

“Maybe it is mind games I don’t know. No-one really knows with Floyd because you don’t know what to expect from him. He can act childish but he is only making himself look bad by backing down from fights. Back in the day all the top fighters like Tommy Hearns and Marvin Hagler fought each other and those legends have said that I can beat Mayweather.”

Khan’s first two fights at the heavier welterweight division have been impressive defeating Luis Collazo in May before taking apart Alexander in a points shut-out. And he is confident he can cause Mayweather problems he has not faced before.

“It may be the speed and explosive power I bring now, I have got better.” Khan added:

“He may not want the problems I can cause. When people fight Floyd they go to his level of work rate – he only throws 300 punches in a fight. I could do that in a few rounds. He knows he would have to dig deep if he fights me so maybe wants easier fights. I have a style that is very different to most he will have faced. People may not like me but I know I have something that could give Mayweather problems.

“A fight between us would be a game of chess – all about speed, footwork, movement and accuracy not punch power. It is about winning rounds against Floyd. The deal I agreed and signed for the first fight a year ago you would not have believed. It wasn’t big money for me but that proves I just want to take him on. I basically was giving him a sort of free fight and he still didn’t take it. Mayweather is the one I want.

“I really think I have the skills to beat him. I have the quickest hands in boxing. Alexander is very fast and I outboxed him. He has never been outboxed like that before. When I need to turn my A-game on I do it. As I get older I am so focused on what I need to do. Against Mayweather I would be so focused. This is the biggest fight ever. As soon as it’s done I will be straight in the gym. It has to happen in the next year I think.”
