Respected boxing writer Dan Rafael has reported that, providing Teofimo Lopez secures victory over Jose Campa this weekend, the American will be called to face Britain’s Ohara Davies by the WBA at 140-pounds.

Purse bids were scheduled to go ahead for a final eliminator between Davies and Spaniard Sandor Martin, but the latter has now notified the WBA that he wishes to be withdrawn from consideration. Shakhram Giyasov was next in line to face the Brit but he too has declined, leaving the door open for Lopez to potentially face Davies if he wins this weekend. A winner would then presumably become mandatory challenger to contest for the world title in the near future.

The WBA strap at 140-pounds is currently vacant after Scotland’s Josh Taylor chose to vacate the belt in recent months. Alberto Puello of the Dominican Republic is set to face Batyr Akhmedov on August 20th in Hollywood for the full title.
