Dronfield’s Lewis Taylor gets a night to remember on Saturday May 11, when he appears on the undercard of Jamie McDonnell’s IBF world bantamweight title fight against Mexico’s Julio Ceja.

Undefeated in eight bouts, Taylor defend his International Masters title against tough hometown fighter, Jason Ball, on the huge bill at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium, with the 23-year-old determined to make a lasting impression on the, expected, 9000 strong crowd.

“It’s going to be a great experience,” stated Lewis. “Obviously I’ve never fought at a venue like this, outside at a football stadium, and it’s going to be great to say I’ve been on the undercard of a world title fight.

“I don’t normally get nervous, but obviously I’ll be wanting to impress and put on a good performance. When there are quite a few people [watching] I perform better anyway, so it should hopefully work in my favour. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Last time out in March, at Sheffield’s Don Valley Stadium, Taylor won the International Masters (Bronze) middleweight title, and secured his first inside-the-distance victory, with an impressive sixth round stoppage of the previously unbeaten, Greg O’Neill.

Set to make the first defence of his newly won belt against Ball at the Keepmoat, Lewis believes he is improving with every fight and that his moment on the big stage couldn’t have come at a better time.

“I like to think I’m a good [technical] boxer, and I like to work people out and wear them down. I’m an all-rounder really and I don’t mind getting stuck in and having a fight if that’s what has to be done.

“I really feel like my work’s coming together now and I feel more relaxed in the ring. It’s all starting to come together since I’ve moved gym. They [trainers, Roger Sampson and Keith Palmer] know how I need to be treated to get the best out of me, and it’s all working really well.”

‘Daddy Cool’ Ball, 29, may have only won five of his 18 contests, but he has a reputation as a tough operator who always comes to fight. With the added incentive of his belt being up for grabs, Lewis knows his opponent will be desperate to cause an upset on his home patch, but the Derbyshire man is sure he will come out on top in an exciting scrap for the fans.

“I’m willing to get in with anyone,” said Taylor. “Of the five he [Ball] has won he’s knocked four of them out so he looks like a strong kid, but I’m going to do what I do, use my fitness on him and wear him down.

“I never look for a stoppage, I always go for the win and if the stoppage is there I’ll try and take it. I think it is [a step up]; it looks like he’s going to come and have a go. It’s for my title and he’s going to try and win, which will be in my favour because if he’s throwing shots then he’ll leave himself open a bit more. It should be a really good fight.”

Dennis Hobson Promotions presents ‘Making History’ featuring Jamie McDonnell versus Julio Ceja for the vacant IBF world bantamweight title at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium on May 11.
