Interview with British heavyweight Contender Dillian Whyte

Is Dillian Whyte the real deal? All will become clearer after the Brixton fighter’s next bout.

A pro for little over a year, it’s all been plain sailing so far for ‘The Villain’. Coasting to 9-0, with six KOs, Whyte’s powerful performances have grabbed the attention of pundits and punters alike – and now it’s time to deliver on his potential.

On November 30 at the Aintree Equestrian Centre, on the David Price versus Matt Skelton undercard, Whyte will eye ‘Big Bad’ John McDermott in the opposite corner and the English heavyweight title will be up for grabs.

Undoubtedly, McDermott represents Dillian’s biggest hurdle to date by far. If you are a British heavyweight ‘worth your salt’ then John is a test that must be passed.

Frank Maloney once labelled McDermott ‘the unluckiest heavyweight in the country’ after controversial losses in a British title fight to Danny Williams (18 July 2008) and an English title shot against Tyson Fury (11 September 2009).

Since then ‘Big Bad’ John, 27-8 (18), has demolished former big-punching prospect Larry Olubamiwo in a round … and been demolished in a round himself by David Price.

This is a fight John has to win if he is to have any future in boxing, and one Dillian must succeed in if he is to be considered a genuine threat to British boxing’s best big men.

How highly do you rate John McDermott?

I rate John a lot. He’s a great fighter who’s had a few bad decisions but now I feel it’s my time.

How dangerous an opponent is he?

He’s very dangerous, especially around a fridge, that’s why I keep mine locked!

This is a big step up for you, John is by far the best guy you’ve faced to date – how confident are you you’re ready for the test?

I’m 110 per cent confident. It’s a big step up for me and I’m ready for that step up.

How do you see the fight going?

I see John getting hurt!

What would it mean to become the English heavyweight champion?

It would mean a lot to me. Many great champions have won this belt and I look forward to being part of British boxing history.

Big fight verdict – who wins, David Price or Matt Skelton?

I think Price should take it. What round I don’t know, but Matt is a very durable fighter who I have a lot of respect for as a fellow martial artist and boxer.

David Price versus Matt Skelton for the British heavyweight title will headline at Liverpool’s Aintree Equestrian Centre on November 30. Support will include Darren Hamilton and Steve Williams contesting the British light-welterweight belt, and John McDermott versus Dillian Whyte for the English heavyweight title.
