Lee Selby will defend his Commonwealth featherweight title against unbeaten Australian Corey McConnell on the undercard of Brian Rose v Joachim Alcine at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool on April 20.
Selby, 26, is lined up to co-headline a big Matchroom show in Cardiff on June 15, alongside Gavin Rees. Eddie Hearn the British champions promoter has big world title ambitions for the Barry man and will be hoping that there are no slip ups against McConnell who will be looking to disrupt the ambitious plans the promoter has in store for Selby (14-1, 5).
McConnell, 27, (11-0) is the Australian champion and this will be the first time he has fought outside his native land
“I can’t wait to watch Lee in action and he will have his work cut out against a motivated McConnell,” said Hearn.
“McConnell has an exciting style and will come to fight but in my opinion Selby is the new star of British boxing and I’m looking for him to make a major statement in Blackpool.”
On the seaside undercard;
Brian Rose challenges Joachim Alcine for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental light-middleweight title knowing a win will put him in line for a world title fight. Local lad Scotty Cardle will meet Maxi Hughes for the Central Area lightweight title.
Also on the bill China Clarke defends his English cruiserweight title against Blackpool’s Matty Askin. Former Team GB stars Callum Smith and ‘The Captain’ Thomas Stalker also make appearances in their fledgling professional careers.
