Eddie Hearn‘s Matchroom Boxing announced on Wednesday that newly-crowned IBF super-featherweight world champion Joe Cordina will make the first defence of his title against Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov on November 5th.

Taking place at the Etihad Arena, the card will be the first of Matchroom’s newly-announced ‘Championship Series’ in Abu Dhabi, and is headlined by Dmitry Bivol‘s defence of his light-heavyweight strap against mandatory challenger Gilberto Ramirez.

Cordina stunned the boxing world when he blasted through Kenichi Ogowa inside two rounds at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff with a hellacious right-hand which left the Japan man flat on his back and unable to make the count. A mega showdown with fellow 130-pound champion Shakur Stevenson has been mooted for the near future, but the Welshman must first move past the Tajikistan man on November 5th. Rakhimov has only one slight blemish on his seventeen-fight record, a ten-round majority decision draw versus former champion Joseph Diaz, and already possesses thirteen knockouts in sixteen wins so far.

The card will be broadcast on streaming platform DAZN.
