Blackburn’s Mickey Ellison picked up the vacant Central Area title at light-heavyweight with a resounding sixth-round stoppage of Southport’s Jake Barton at the Liverpool Olympia on Saturday night.
In an entertaining spectacle, Ellison looked to have the better of the action up until the point of the stoppage and was particularly dominant in that sixth round, backing Barton up against the ropes behind a ramrod jab. Barton was brave and didn’t once look for a way out, looking to return with hard hooks of his own, but it was the Blackburn man who looked to have the greater snap and timing in his work. The Southport man looked to have been rocked by the right-hand of Ellison on numerous occasions, with the crucial moment coming in the final minute. A right-hook from Barton glanced past the head of Ellison, with the latter returning with a devastating right uppercut of his own which snapped back the head of the Lancashire man. The latter’s legs dipped and referee Mark Lyson administered a count. The bout restarted but the writing was on the wall for Barton who found himself down on the canvas moments later, the result of an arrow-like straight right from 6″2 Ellison. Lyson waved the contest off moments later.
The bout handed the thirty-two-year-old Ellison his first major title so far, having previously lost for both the Central Area and English title at super-middleweight, while also scoring his fifth victory inside the distance . Barton meanwhile found himself on the losing side for the first time in his eighth professional outing and will now surely re-group as he attempts a second run at the domestic light-heavyweight scene.
On Saturday’s undercard, welterweight Nathan Bennett moved to 11-3-0 with a dominant six-round points victory over Rustem Fatkhullin, while Connor Butler won comfortably by decision against John Spencer at 130lbs. Connor Goulding won on his debut at super-middleweight, while James Francis enjoyed success in a four-round contest in his maiden bout at 140-pounds.
