One of the Liverpool fighting Smith brothers, Liam Smith has risen to the top of the domestic light-middleweight scene with only Brian Rose above him in the rankings. Rose had vacated his British title belt after winning it outright and Smith outpointed Erick Ochieng in September to claim the championship. Smith finished 2012 as the Commonwealth champion after defeating Steve O’Meara for that belt. Smith ended last year with a solid eye catching 4th round TKO over tough Mancunian contender Mark Thompson. Smith is as tough has old boots and has a great technique and style to his work. He naturally goes to the body with hurtful intent and can mix it up inside or looks at ease fighting on the outside. A former multi National champion as an amateur, Smith boxed for England, but his first love was always football and still is, and he often turns out for his local team but coming from a family of boxers, it was no surprise  he would follow Paul and Stephen, current British title holders, into the prize ring. Younger brother Callum is also making quick progress and looks to keep the Smith name going for many years. A product of the famous Rotunda ABC in Liverpool, Liam is now coached by Joe Gallagher in Manchester and is improving in every fight. This is now Smith’s 6th year as a professional and he has been learning his trade steadily and is still only 25. He is entering his prime years and is expected to blossom in the next few. First he will want to win the coveted Lonsdale belt outright by having another two successful defences. If he can do that this year, then after that he will have served his apprenticeship and can be has good has he wants to be. A real throw back style of fighter and another UK prospect to be happy about and one to get behind. Liam Smith on Twitter: @LiamBeefySmith
